Auto Insurance Information

Auto insurance is just a part of driving, unfortunately it is a very expensive part of driving. The purpose of auto insurance is to pay for any damage that is caused in an accident. In general the legal requirement for auto insurance will only be to make sure that you can pay for damage you cause to other people. However this is starting to change and many areas now require you to have more than just liability coverage.

The most basic type of auto insurance is liability coverage, this is the type that all drivers are required by law to have. This is so that if you cause an accident you there will be money available to pay for the damage that you have done, particularly for any injuries that you cause. Unfortunately despite the fact that this type of insurance is required a by a law there are quite a few drivers who don't have the coverage that they are supposed to have. So many in fact that many areas are now requiring that drives have uninsured driver coverage. This is so that if you get into an accident with somebody who doesn't have insurance you will be covered by your own insurance. Even if you are not legally required to have this insurance where you live it is a good idea to get it.

Another type of auto insurance coverage that is becoming required in a lot of areas is personal injury protection. Again whether you are legally required to have it in the area that you live in it is a good idea to have the coverage. This is to pay for any injuries that you suffer in an accident that you cause. If you are the cause of an accident there is a good chance that you will be injured and the cost of medical care can be very expensive, especially if your injuries prevent you from working. A lot of people have found themselves in serious financial troubles because of injuries that they suffered in accidents they caused. This is why many states have now made it a requirement to have personal injury protection.

It is also possible to get insurance to cover any damage that occurs to your car. This comes in two forms generally one is collision insurance which will cover you for damage done to your car in an accident that you caused. Comprehensive insurance will cover you for damage to your car regardless of how it is caused, including theft. Whether or not you need these types of coverage will depend on your situation, if you have an expensive new car you will likely want comprehensive coverage. If you are driving a ten year old beater you probably don't need it. If you have borrowed money to purchase your car the lender will likely require that you have comprehensive coverage, this ensures they get paid even if the car gets stolen or totalled.
