Home Insurance Information
Home insurance is critical if you own a house, without it you run the risk of losing everything. Disasters can and do happen and if they do you are going to need to have the money to rebuild your home. Since few people have that kind of money sitting around their saving account it is critical to have home insurance.
Home insurance is something that all homeowners need to have, in most cases your mortgage lender is going to require that you have. The big thing then is to make sure that you have the right coverage. You have a few options as to the amount of coverage you have but you are going to want to make sure that you get replacement value coverage. That will make sure that you can afford to replace your home and anything that was inside it in the event of a disaster. You do have the option of getting coverage for the actual value of your home but this could leave you in a difficult position when it comes time to rebuild.
The other thing that you need to keep in mind when you are deciding on how much home insurance coverage you need is that you only need to cover the structure of your home. You don't need to cover the land that it is on. This is a mistake that a lot of people make and it results in them paying more for insurance than they need to. In the overwhelming majority of cases if your home is destroyed you will be able to rebuild it on the land that it previously occupied. There are very few disasters that would make the land uninhabitable.
The other big issue when selecting home insurance is making sure that you have enough coverage for the items inside your house. In most cases your policy will cover you for the items inside your house up to a percentage of the value of the structure, usually seventy percent. This means that if your home is destroyed the insurance company will pay you for the value of the structure plus seventy percent for the contents of the house. You will need to decide if this is enough coverage for the contents of your home, if you have a lot of valuable items you will likely want to purchase extra coverage.
It is important to keep in mind that your home insurance normally only covers things that are actually inside of your house. It does not cover anything that is stored outside, nor does it cover landscaping. This also applies to outlying buildings so if you have a shed or a detached garage anything that you keep in there will not be covered. If you have any valuables that you store outside of the house you will need to make sure that you add them to your policy.
